박재은__Jae Eun Park
Jae Eun Park is a visual artist from Seoul, South Korea. A drive to visualize the abstract nature of relationships and emotion define the work of Jae Eun Park. Her main tools for art making are, but not limited to, printmaking, sculpture and drawing. She received masters degree at Tyler School of art in Philadelphia and BFA from Hong-Ik University in Seoul with a concentration in printmaking and a minor in industrial art. In recent years, Jae Eun Park has participated in numerous exhibitions and art festivals in Seoul, Rome and Philadelphia. She was awarded the 2nd prize in competition for emerging artists granted by Korean Contemporary Printmakers Association in 2016. In 2019, she received the Project Completion Grant from Tyler School of Art.
"I am interested in human behaviors and emotions. To be honest, I am interested in expressing my emotions that are provoked by internal/external circumstances. In order to visualize abstract concepts, I often use figure and their gesture. For example, depiction of senses and hands in action are used as metaphors to describe abstract concepts like the passing of rumor and knowledge, desire, greed, craving, attachment, and discrimination. Making art to me is like how children pretend play. Both involve thinking in many different perspectives and imagination. Power distribution in our world is what drew me to make the 24 series of monotypes about the relation and tension between so-called powered ones and less powered ones. Though this power can be interpreted as existing outside of oneself such as power dynamics in our society, I think of them as something that may be existing inside oneself. An example would be how certain emotions and thoughts can overpower others. I often imagine about imaginary beings in my body that formed a miniature version of society inside me. My works contains an observation of my emotions and my experiences living in society, both as one of many people and one unique being. "
